Happy "Wafer" Day!!!!

It doesn’t take long when we move to a new area for someone to say to us… “Aren’t you that family that is out running with their kids on their bikes??”  No doubt, we have three great troopers and we spend some of our family time on the weekends riding/running.  It is during these runs in the past that I have mentioned, when we have made some of our biggest decisions.  These runs are also some the times that we have had some of our best conversations.  In the past few months, I have had just Garrett with me several times… and he usually spends the majority of the run peppering me with various facts.  But lately, our conversations have gotten much deeper and I have found myself at a loss for how to respond.   A great deal of our discussions were centered around God, Jesus, Heaven and dying.   I struggled with answering him on so many levels…   So we thought it was time to ramp up our church going and religious education…   And as a result we officially celebrated their first communion on May 12th.
Garrett calls it “Wafer Day!”

No doubt this was a special day for Garrett.  He literally counted down the days.  Jordan on the other hand…  not so much.  She saw this as a huge inconvenience, often having her to leave early from baseball games and made for a very long religious afternoon on Saturday from 3:30 to 6:00.  (church included)  But it was a bonus that there were snacks at the weekly CCD meetings and that seemed to make all the difference in the world! It was touch and go for awhile when we broke the news to her that yes.. she absolutely had to wear a dress and…
WE STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WE GOT THE DRESS AND SHOES ON HER!
No way would she go for a veil though like some of the girls...  needless to say, Ayden stood by with complete envy offering to wear the veil for her!

The kids question me sometimes when I don’t take communion.  They feel like I am going hungry… and always offer to bring a wafer back to me.  It is important for them to know that there are many ways to celebrate God and I wasn’t raised Catholic and since I wasn’t raised Catholic, I cannot take communion.   I used the analogy of SCUBA diving.  Some people get PADI certified and some people get NAUI certified.  Both people can SCUBA dive, they just learned the same concepts differently.

This day was particularly special because we had Gram & Coach here to celebrate with us!

2 down and one to go…  We told Ayden she was next.  She wanted “in” when she realized that you got to wear veils, “fancy” shoes, a dress AND got snacks!!!!
